The name Scacciadiavoli (Devil banisher), derives from an exorcism carried out here in the 17th century. The episode involved a young woman possessed by the devil, who was made to drink some of the local red wine by the exorcist, which succeeded in driving away the devils. The hamlet has been named after this historic event and is today called “Scacciadiavoli.” In the mid-19th century, Prince Ugo Boncompagni commissioned the building of wine production cellars which are still in working order today, and due to the large size of these cellars it took the name of “Localita Cantinone” (large cellar area). In the mid 20th century, the grandfather of the current owners, Amilcare Pambuffetti, purchased the estate, which extends 130 ha, 20 ha of which are for the growing of grapes. The estate produces the typical wines: Montefalco Sagrantino (11 ha), Montefalco Rosso (5 ha), and Grechetto (3 ha). An architectural and functional renovation project is currently underway of the “Cantinone” premises, involving both the reconversion and expansion of the vine growing area, aimed at improving the quality standards of the production of the “Montefalco Sagrantino” and the “Montefalco Rosso” varieties. The Pambuffetti brothers are optimistic that thanks to the potential of the land and the micro-climatic conditions, the Scacciadiavoli Estate, is sure to reach its objectives, with the collaboration of highly experienced agronomists and oenologists. That was fundamental enough, given its implicit life-long commitment, but she went one step further by deciding to build a winery to bottle wine instead of selling the entire crop of grapes to the co-op. Every year thereafter she pulled more vines from the co-op so that by vintage 2023 she was able to market 20,000 bottles (1,650 cases). She quit all herbicides in 2022 and minimized other treatments. Founded in 1967 by Dr. Berardino Santarelli, a native of Amatrice, the estate is situated in Le Ferriere, in the province of Latina, approximately 50 kilometers south of Rome. At that time, the Agro Pontino valley was largely uncharted territory in terms of viticulture, presenting a unique opportunity for exploration and development.

In 1985, driven by a vision to unlock the region's potential, Berardino's son, Antonio Santarelli, initiated an ambitious research project. This scientific endeavor, unprecedented in its scope, was led by the young enologist Paolo Tiefenthaler from Trentino. Their efforts bore fruit with significant successes in cultivating red varieties like Syrah and Petit Verdot, as well as whites such as Sauvignon, Viognier, and Petit Manseng. Clive, an Englishman, took a job as assistant wine maker at the Seresin Winery, New Zealand’s most prominent biodynamic producer, and two weeks later found himself promoted to head winemaker and then viticulturist. Subsequently, with each harvest he oversaw 30-odd Sauvignon Blanc ferments along with 50-odd Pinot Noir ferments without yeast or acid additions, typically raising the wine without finings or filtrations. This evolved into making Pinot without SO2 additions. He did that for twelve years. Then he met Peter.

They discovered that they both had daughters named Chloe. They both wanted to start their own winery. And they wanted to be authentic, as in working with completely transparent practices, organic and biodynamic methods, and using next to zero additives—all while making solidly delicious wine rather than weirdly funky stuff. They wanted to break the mold, and it’s happening now pretty quickly in New Zealand, but still only about 5% of all vineyards are farmed organically. So it’s a big mold to break, made no easier by the fact that Peter and Clive couldn’t start a vineyard, let alone buy one, or build a winery; that was too far of a stretch.

But upon mortgaging their houses, they came up with enough to buy grapes. One morning they went out fishing, and upon returning the cousin served him a cup of coffee made from his plantation beans. Ryan never forgot the taste, and he was fired up forevermore by the idea that it could only have come from Kona and nowhere else. Agriculture, he realized, could be so much more than cornfields and overalls.

In Australia, he did vineyard work in the Hunter and Yarra Valleys, waited tables in Melbourne, and worked the harvest on the Mornington Peninsula just south of the city. He became assistant winemaker at the Red Car Winery, where he met consultant David Ramey and where he was further exposed to vineyard and soil experts. He worked a harvest in Argentina at Vina Cobos with Paul Hobbs.

In the spring of 2008, he returned from Argentina. He was back in the game, determined to make his own wine. He knocked on Richard Sanford’s door to ask how he might possibly buy some fruit. That took some brass, given that Sanford was the legendary pioneer of the Santa Rita Hills. But Ryan came armed with the very words that he had heard Sanford speak, framed in calligraphy as a gift for the crusty Vietnam Veteran: Pinot Noir is about commitment, it’s about persistence, it’s about the journey. There’s a magic in it, there’s a magic in Pinot Noir!

Sanford had been the first to see the potential for vines in the Santa Rita Hills, a unique coast range that runs east-west rather than paralleling the coast and so is directly open to the Pacific’s cooling influences. He planted Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in 1971. He went on to establish the La Encantada Vineyard in 2000 just to the west of his original vineyard. He agreed to sell young Deovlet enough grapes from La Encantada to make around 100 cases of wine.

Since then, Ryan has fine-tuned things as he has gained experience, garnering a reputation as a star exemplifying the best of the new breed of California winemakers (although he’s quick to point out that he likes the kiss of the sun on his fruit, and he’s not orthodox in his methods). He’s dialed back on new oak and extractions, he’s become comfortable being among the first to start the harvest, and he has come to prize a collaborative relationship with Grace Kegel, his assistant in the cellar. She’s done harvests in New Zealand, South Africa, and of course on the central coast, and she joined Ryan in 2013. Most importantly, he has come to concentrate on the vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills to learn their ways.
