Rabigato and Viosinho lead the blend, with moderate-elevation vineyards helping preserve brightness in a region better known for muscular reds and Port. The wine opens with rounded grapefruit and crisp red apple, then picks up apple blossom and a light saline-mineral edge. Its acidity is lively without turning severe, and a subtle breadth through the middle gives it more shape than the easygoing price might suggest. Fresh, dry and quietly textured, it is a natural match for grilled white fish, shrimp, oysters, sushi, lemony salads and simple roast chicken - though a cold bottle and a bowl of salted almonds make a perfectly respectable dinner plan too.

About the Winery

Churchill's is the rare Port house that can plausibly be called a start-up. Johnny Graham founded it in 1981 at age 29, drawing on two centuries of family experience but determined to make a drier, more personal style of Port under his own name. The name he chose came from his wife Caroline Churchill's family. More than four decades later, Johnny still makes the wine alongside Ricardo Pinto Nunes, while the next generation of the Graham family helps run the company. Churchill's remains family-owned and describes itself as the last independent British Port house.

The firm is based in Vila Nova de Gaia, with Quinta da Gricha in the Cima Corgo serving as its viticultural heart. This south-bank, Grade A property rises from roughly 150 to 400 meters, giving its schist-based vineyards a range of exposures and ripening conditions. Churchill's farms sustainably under SATIVA certification and works with the Douro's traditional varieties rather than importing a foreign template. Port remains central, but the estate's dry Douro wines show the same preference for freshness, mineral definition and restraint. Tradition is very much present here; it simply has its collar unbuttoned.
