Marilena Barbera planted it in the Sottostrada vineyard, where sandy limestone meets alluvial clay just inland from the Mediterranean. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented spontaneously with wild yeast, spending five days on their skins in neutral Slavonian oak before six months on the fine lees in older oak barrels. The result catches Frappato at its most charming: translucent ruby, fragrant and gently tannic, with cherry, pomegranate and blood orange wrapped in violet, red rose and fresh mint. Pink pepper and sea-spray salinity sharpen the finish. This is a red to serve cool rather than solemn - especially with swordfish, tuna, seafood stew, grilled vegetables, couscous or young sheep's-milk cheese.

About the Winery

Azienda Agricola Barbera is the work of Marilena Barbera, a third-generation grower at Tenuta Belicello, outside Menfi on Sicily's southwest coast. Her grandfather planted the family's first vines in the early 1920s; estate bottling began in 1996, and Cantine Barbera was formally established in 2001. After her father's death in 2006, Marilena took full responsibility for the estate. By 2010 she had begun steering the wines toward the transparent, low-intervention style that now defines them.

Belicello lies close enough to the Mediterranean that salt air and steady southern and western winds are part of the farming equation. Its patchwork of alluvial sand and clay, deep limestone-rich soils and darker organic-rich ground lets Barbera match grapes to very specific sites. The vineyards are dry-farmed, worked organically and biodynamically, and planted heavily to Sicilian varieties including Inzolia, Grillo, Perricone, Frappato and Nero d'Avola. In the cellar, native fermentations, patient lees aging and neutral vessels favor energy over polish. These are natural wines, but clarity - not cellar theatrics - is the point.
