The valley-floor site consists of well-drained, gravelly sandy loam, while nearby east-west mountain ranges channel cool Pacific air inland. Warm days ripen the fruit, and dramatic nighttime cooling helps the grapes retain their natural acidity.

The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel, keeping its aromatics vivid and its fruit unobscured by oak. Only a small addition of sulfur is made at bottling. Dried lemon peel, lime and grapefruit are joined by crisp green apple, passion fruit and fresh pineapple, with subtle herbal notes and a stony, lightly saline edge. At 13.6% alcohol, it has plenty of flavor and texture without sacrificing Sauvignon Blanc’s refreshing energy.

Serve it well chilled with oysters, ceviche, grilled fish, shrimp, citrus-dressed salads, asparagus, fresh goat cheese or herb-roasted chicken. Its bright acidity also makes it particularly good with fried chicken, fish and chips or other crisp, salty foods.

About the Winery

Coquelicot, pronounced “ko-klee-ko,” is the French word for the brilliant red poppies that grow across the French countryside. The name carries particular meaning for founder Bernard Rosenson. His parents were Polish Holocaust survivors who reached France after the war, and Bernard spent much of his early childhood there before the family immigrated to New York in 1956. His memories of French museums, countryside and red poppies eventually supplied the identity for his California wine estate.

After building a career in healthcare and hospitality, Bernard developed a serious interest in wine while restoring the historic Sky Room restaurant in Long Beach. In 2005, he and his son Jonathan purchased a vineyard near Solvang that had previously been called Mission Estates. A naming dispute with Château La Mission Haut-Brion encouraged the family to choose something more personal, and Coquelicot was born.

The property was planted in 1997 and now encompasses 94 acres in the Los Olivos District. Its valley-floor soils are composed of well-drained Ballard gravelly fine sandy loam. Coastal breezes and nighttime temperature drops that can approach 50 degrees allow the grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity.

The Rosensons introduced organic and sustainable farming protocols in 2007, earning CCOF organic certification in 2015. Cover crops, biodiversity and natural alternatives to synthetic herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers are central to the vineyard program. The winery itself is also CCOF certified.

Winemaker and viticulturist Mike Roth brings experience from Grgich Hills, Demetria and Martian Ranch, along with his own Lo-Fi Wines project. His restrained cellar approach favors native fermentations, neutral vessels, minimal sulfur and little manipulation. The result is a range of wines that reflects the generosity of Santa Ynez Valley fruit without polishing away its freshness or personality.
