About the Winery

Domaine des Huards, located in the Loire Valley of France in the commune of Cour-Cheverny, has a rich history and a unique dedication to sustainable winemaking that spans generations. Founded in 1846, the winery has remained within the same family, now managed by the seventh generation. Over the years, it has become renowned for its dedication to cultivating the rare Romorantin grape variety, which forms the heart of the appellation and produces the distinct, age-worthy wines that have defined Cour-Cheverny's character.

The domaine spans approximately 35 hectares of vines, which are primarily devoted to Romorantin, though it also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and some Pinot Noir and Gamay for its other wines. The soil composition of the estate is rich in clay, limestone, and silica, creating ideal conditions for the expression of minerality and structure in the wines.

In the 1990s, Domaine des Huards began a significant transition toward sustainable farming practices. Since then, the estate has practiced biodynamic viticulture, allowing them to produce wines that reflect the true terroir of Cour-Cheverny while prioritizing environmental health. The biodynamic certification not only underscores their dedication to quality and sustainability but also adds a level of complexity to their winemaking.

In terms of operations, Domaine des Huards focuses on both traditional and innovative techniques. Harvesting is typically done by hand to ensure that only the finest grapes are selected. The winemaking process is meticulous, with an emphasis on minimal intervention. Fermentation usually takes place in stainless steel tanks to retain the freshness and character of the grapes, especially with Romorantin, whose acidity and minerality are hallmarks of the region. Wines are aged on fine lees, which enhances their texture and complexity, and bottling occurs with minimal filtration to preserve natural flavors.
