The aromas here are captivating in their restraint—at once earthy, floral, and quietly wild. Red and black cherries mingle with rose petals and cracked pepper, while subtler tones of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and volcanic dust give the wine an unmistakable sense of place. There’s an undercurrent of wild strawberry and pomegranate that feels almost sun-warmed, lifted by a faint whiff of anise and spice from the hillside air of Cori. The bouquet is both rustic and refined, a nod to the grape’s ancient Roman roots and its modern revival.

On the palate, Argeo walks a graceful line between elegance and intensity. The texture is sleek and supple, with fine-grained tannins supporting layers of sour cherry, black tea, and plum skin. A mineral thread runs straight through the center, grounding the fruit and giving the wine a faintly smoky edge. Bright acidity carries each sip toward a savory finish touched by herbs and spice—think thyme, peppercorn, and a hint of cocoa. It’s a wine that builds quietly, unfolding with every moment in the glass, and one that reveals Cesanese’s rare gift for both charm and character.

Cesanese is a Roman treasure that loves the table. Try it with rigatoni all’amatriciana, roasted pork with fennel and garlic, or a rich mushroom risotto. Its peppery bite and red-berry brightness also make it a perfect match for charcuterie, cacio e pepe, or a classic margherita pizza. For something a little unexpected, pour it with jerk chicken or grilled eggplant—the wine’s savory-spice undertones tie it all together.

About the Winery

In the ancient hilltop town of Cori—about 25 miles southeast of Rome—Cincinnato has redefined what it means to be a cooperative winery. Founded in 1947, this grower-led collective unites over 100 small farmers with a shared vision: to preserve and champion the native grape varieties of Lazio, from Nero Buono and Bellone to the noble Cesanese.

Their approach blends innovation with deep respect for heritage. By focusing on sustainable viticulture and meticulous vineyard management, Cincinnato has helped rescue several indigenous grapes from obscurity, transforming them into some of Italy’s most exciting rediscoveries. The name Cincinnato itself pays homage to the Roman statesman and farmer Cincinnatus—a symbol of humility, integrity, and service to the land.

Today, the winery operates with cutting-edge facilities but old-school heart. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentations are clean and temperature-controlled, and the goal is always balance and authenticity. The Argeo line showcases the expressive purity of Cesanese: aromatic, mineral, and unmistakably Roman in spirit.

Cincinnato’s wines are proof that Lazio’s ancient terroir still has plenty to say—especially when the right people are listening.
