The wine opens with an enticing burst of red and black fruits—strawberries, plums, and ripe cherries mingle with darker hints of blackberry and cassis. These are complemented by a warm layer of baking spices, notably cardamom and cinnamon, along with subtle notes of lavender and black tea. The nose is both bright and layered, suggesting complexity beyond its youthful charm.

On the palate, the wine delivers juicy, vibrant fruit framed by firm yet approachable tannins. There's a pleasing balance between richness and freshness, with a lively acidity that lifts the fruit and extends the finish. Flavors of crushed red berries are joined by savory undertones—think dried herbs and a hint of anise—adding dimension. Though delicious now, the wine’s structure promises graceful evolution over several years.

Old Hill Ranch’s Bambino blocks grow in a mix of Tuscan red loam and darker clay soils, providing both excellent drainage and water retention. The site’s Sonoma Valley location offers warm days, cool nights, and coastal breezes, contributing to balanced ripening, vibrant acidity, and expressive fruit in this organically farmed, dry-farmed vineyard.

The bold fruit and spice make it a great match for grilled meats, especially lamb or pork with rosemary. Its structure stands up to rich dishes like eggplant parmesan or mushroom risotto, while the wine’s vibrant acidity complements tomato-based sauces, aged cheeses, and charcuterie with a hint of spice.

About the Winery

Nestled in the heart of Sonoma Valley, Bucklin Winery is a true steward of California's viticultural heritage. The story begins with Old Hill Ranch, one of the oldest continuously farmed vineyards in the United States, first planted in 1852 and lovingly restored by the Bucklin family in the 1980s. When Otto Teller purchased the property in 1981, it was in a state of decline—forgotten and overgrown—but he saw its potential and laid the foundation for what would become a generational labor of love.

Otto's stepson, Will Bucklin, took the reins in the late 1990s after years of winemaking experience both abroad and in California. With his siblings Kate, Arden, and Ted, Will brought Old Hill Ranch back to life, farming it organically and with deep reverence for its legacy. The ranch is famed for its extraordinary field blend block: over 30 interplanted grape varieties—mostly Zinfandel, but also Grenache, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Mourvèdre, Alicante Bouschet, and many more—planted side by side and harvested together in a singular expression of the land.

Bucklin’s ethos is one of authenticity and patience. They believe great wine starts in the vineyard and is shaped by nature, not manipulation. Dry farming, native yeasts, minimal intervention, and careful aging all reflect this philosophy. Wines like the Bambino Field Blend—sourced from younger vines planted in 2000—are made with the same care and respect as their ancient vine counterparts, offering a vivid snapshot of place and time.

Today, Bucklin remains small, family-run, and proudly independent. Each bottle tells the story of Old Hill Ranch: a living, breathing piece of California history, nurtured by generations who believe that wine should honor the past while embracing the present.
