About the Brewery

Original Pattern is one of Oakland’s most quietly impressive breweries, tucked into a beautiful old brick warehouse in the Jack London district and making the kind of beer that rewards curiosity. The name fits: there’s a clear respect for classic brewing traditions here, but the beers rarely feel stuck in museum mode. They’re clean, expressive, and thoughtfully built, whether that means a crisp lager, a bright pale ale, a deeply hoppy IPA, or something a little more off-center.

The brewery is employee-owned, which feels worth mentioning because the beer has that kind of care baked into it. Original Pattern has also become one of the West Coast’s better places to find beers built around hard-to-get New Zealand hops, giving many of their pale ales and IPAs that vivid mix of citrus, tropical fruit, white grape, and green snap that makes NZ hops so fun when they’re handled well.

They also release beer at a frankly dangerous pace, so there’s always something new coming through the door. Around here, we like breweries that can make the classics properly and still keep things playful. Original Pattern does both, and does it with Oakland character.
