Piero Mancini’s 2024 Cannonau di Sardegna is a fresh, savory, and highly drinkable expression of Sardinia’s signature red grape. Cannonau is the island’s local name for Grenache, and here it shows the grape’s classic red-fruit warmth with a distinctly Sardinian herbal edge.

The wine comes from Gallura in northeastern Sardinia, where granite soils, Mediterranean sun, and the mistral wind shape wines with both ripeness and freshness. Fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, this bottling keeps the focus on pure fruit and regional character: cherry, raspberry, red plum, dried flowers, Mediterranean herbs, cracked pepper, and a subtle mineral finish.

Medium-bodied with soft tannins and balanced acidity, this is the kind of red that earns its keep at dinner. Pair it with roasted pork, grilled sausages, lamb, tomato-based pasta, mushroom pizza, grilled salmon, or a rustic cheese and charcuterie spread.

About the Winery

Piero Mancini is one of Gallura’s benchmark family wineries, based near Olbia in northeastern Sardinia. This is a dramatic corner of the island, shaped by granite hills, cork oaks, Mediterranean scrub, coastal wind, and the famously clear waters of the Costa Smeralda nearby. It is also the homeland of Vermentino di Gallura, Sardinia’s only DOCG wine, and the variety that helped make the Mancini name known well beyond the island.

The story begins with Piero Mancini himself, who was born in Gallura and maintained a deep connection to the region even while pursuing another career. He began planting vineyards in the 1960s and eventually opened Cantina delle Vigne in 1989, turning a long-standing family and regional connection to the land into a serious winery. His guiding idea was straightforward but important: great wine should come from the relationship between climate, soil, and vineyard—not from forcing a style onto the fruit.

Today, the estate is run by the next generation of the Mancini family, with Alessandro, Antonio, and Laura continuing the work their father began. Their wines remain closely tied to Gallura’s identity: sunlit but fresh, aromatic but grounded, polished without losing their island character.

While Mancini is especially known for Vermentino, the family also works with Sardinian classics like Cannonau and Moscato di Gallura, along with a handful of international varieties. That range reflects both the history and the practicality of modern Sardinian winegrowing. This is an island with deep traditions, but also one that has always looked outward—shaped by trade, migration, rugged landscapes, and a fierce sense of place. Mancini’s wines carry that balance nicely: proudly local, broadly approachable, and very much made for the table.
