Every year, Oakland United brews a tribute beer in memory of their friend and former brewer, Andrew Ritter. In 2015 at the age of 29 and in the prime of his life, he was diagnosed with ALS. After only 2 years fighting the disease, all the while living life on his terms, Andrew finally succumbed to this terrible affliction. He never lost his passion for life, beer, family, friends, and rugby. This year, they brewed Scrum-ptious Gator West Coast IPA, the name a nod to Andrew’s passion for rugby and his role in starting San Francisco State University’s Gator rugby team.
About the Brewery
Oakland is and always has been a beer town; a place where hard-working people would gather together to enjoy locally brewed, fresh beer. As the local population grew, Oakland was affectionately referred to as the “Milwaukee of the West” for its numerous neighborhood-based breweries.
Founded in 2009 as Linden Street Brewery, they became the first community-based production brewery in Oakland since Golden West Brewery closed in the 1950s. In 2017, following the sale of their building on Linden Street to a new developer, they moved operations to the waterfront Jack London District and rebranded as Oakland United Beerworks.
