This 2023 Silvaner from Weingut Helmut Christ is bright, savory, and quietly mineral, with the kind of easy versatility that makes a liter bottle feel especially welcome. Grown in Franken’s Maindreieck, where clay-limestone and Muschelkalk soils give the wine its firm, stony edge, it shows Silvaner’s understated strengths beautifully: fresh herbs, lemon peel, golden apple, Asian pear, and a subtle green snap.
The palate has a little more body than the aromatics might suggest, but it stays clean and lifted, with crisp acidity and a dry, mineral finish. It’s not an especially flashy white, and that’s part of the appeal. This is a wine built for the table: roast chicken, grilled corn, sausages, herby vegetables, picnic spreads, salty cheeses, and anything with a little char will all feel right at home alongside it.
About the Winery
Helmut Christ is a well-known winemaker and pioneer in biodynamic viticulture. Based in the Franken region of Germany, Helmut and his family have been committed to organic and biodynamic farming practices for decades. In 1974, Christ transitioned to organic viticulture due to concerns about soil erosion and the impact of conventional farming methods on both the environment, and his own health. His approach puts emphasis on sustainability, the health of the soil, and the quality of the crops.
Christ's winery, Weingut Helmut Christ, has vineyards that benefit from the unique terroir of the Maindreieck area, characterized by its Muschelkalk (shell limestone) soils. The winery received biodynamic Demeter certification in 2006, and has maintained a strong connection to the natural environment ever since, reflecting its commitment to natural and holistic farming practices.
In recent years, Helmut Christ has handed over the management of the winery to his son, Michael, who continues the family's tradition of biodynamic winemaking. The Christ family’s dedication to biodynamic principles ensures their wines express the true character of their terroir.
